Working in a Living Lab for Circular Housing Construction

The construction sector has a tremendous impact on our planet. Meeting our housing needs requires a lot of raw materials, and the sector also contributes to pollution and global warming. At the same time, we are facing a significant housing shortage, with nearly 400,000 new homes needed, and the pace of construction falling short. We all want to live well and affordably in houses with low energy costs and a healthy indoor climate. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on circularity and making the existing housing stock more sustainable. But how can you, as a student, contribute to this?

A "living lab" is an experimental environment where you, along with experts, industry partners, and other students, explore innovations that contribute to a circular supply chain in the housing construction sector. Here, you have the opportunity to turn theoretical knowledge into practical solutions and make a real impact on the future of the construction sector.

What will you learn?

You will learn how to organise circularity in a supply chain, both in terms of materials and processes. Additionally, you will work together in interdisciplinary project teams, consisting of fellow students and industry partners. This collaboration provides you with the chance to learn how to bring out the best in yourself. You will work on your individual competencies by setting goals for your skills, knowledge, and behaviour.

What will you do?

  • You will work together with fellow students for an industry partner and key players in the housing construction sector on a circular challenge.
  • You will receive a series of workshops and guest lectures by market experts, lecturers, and teachers.
  • You will work on a professional development portfolio. This consists of weekly reflections on your experiences in the programme.

Who will you work with? (Participating programmes)

You will work together with students from International Business SC(OPS), Bedrijfskunde and Global Marketing & Sales.

You will usually work in teams of 5 to 6 students and can work in either a Dutch-speaking team or an English-speaking team.

You will work on issues such as:

  • How to make roofs more sustainable by applying bio-based materials such as flax, hemp, sheep's wool, etc.
  • How to create a good business model to promote circular kitchens or circular bathrooms
  • How to use hemp as a crop for insulation material for the construction sector in a certain region of the country
  • How to reuse single-pane glass
  • How to implement circular solar panels or sustainable floor insulation solutions together with other homeowners
  • How to reuse used central heating systems from the housing sector
  • How to turn green spaces between apartment buildings into a multi-social relaxation area for residents
